The Second Month Is the Cushion
It is the first of the month. Next month's categories are already funded: rent, groceries, the car, the bill you split into twelfths.
That is what YNAB means by getting a month ahead. The help article says it directly: spending for next month is completely funded before the new month rolls around. The longer guide calls that month a mini emergency fund, a whole month of living expenses already saved, so you are living on last month's income.
It is still a buffer. The month after it is the first cushion a shock in the current month does not take apart.
Where a shock actually lands
One month ahead means this month opened fully funded, and income landing now is meant for the month after this one. YNAB shows the progress as money assigned in future months, next to the total of your targets. On the blog they call that total Cost to Be Me.
That cash is also the first pile a surprise reaches. Once money is assigned into the future, the help article is specific: the Ready to Assign figure that matters is the one in the future-most month. Add $200 to Auto Maintenance in the current month and Ready to Assign there can stay at zero, while that $200 comes out of the future month. If the future number goes negative, you move money back from categories until it is zero again.
When you are exactly one month ahead, the future-most month is next month. Cover a repair now and you pull from the month you already funded. Next month no longer opens whole. The buffer did its job, and the next paychecks rebuild "funded on the 1st" instead of getting any further.
What the second month changes
The same help article says you can get ahead by two or three months, not only one. Fund the month after next and that further month becomes the future-most one. A shock still reduces Ready to Assign out there, and you still cover a negative number from categories in that month. What changes is which month gives the money up.
Next month stays funded. Income landing now refills the outer month instead of rescuing the inner one.
Say your targets total $3,200 a month, and a $900 repair lands now. YNAB's walkthrough uses a household spending about $3,000, so swap in your own Cost to Be Me.
- One month ahead: about $3,200 is in next month. Pulling $900 leaves next month short on the 1st. You are matching paychecks to whatever you unfunded.
- Two months ahead: about $6,400 is assigned across the next two months. The $900 comes out of the further month. Next month still opens fully funded.
Not a three-to-six-month category
Those two funded months are not a category holding three to six months of expenses.
Months-ahead money is assigned to ordinary categories in future months: rent, food, insurance. Those dollars already have the jobs they will do when the month arrives. A larger emergency category is money whose job is to sit. You spend it if income stops, or if the hit is bigger than a month of targets, not on a normal month's groceries.
Two months ahead does not finish that reserve, and the reserve does not replace the months. One month ahead is the buffer YNAB describes. The second month is the first point where a normal shock leaves next month intact. A layoff fund is still its own category, funded on purpose, on top. Mix the piles and you will either raid next month's groceries or refuse to touch money that was supposed to be usable.
Where the next dollar goes
Stay in the plan you already keep in YNAB. This is not a second plan.
Cover overspending in the current month, then fund this month's categories. Move forward one month and fund it the same way. That is the buffer. Only then assign into the month after. The finish line is the checkmark YNAB shows when a future month is fully funded. When a shock hits, cover it from the future-most month, then refill that month before you reach any further.
DollarAMP does not assign any of those months. The assignments stay in YNAB. The cash-flow calendar is the other view of the same stretch: scheduled transactions run forward day by day, a closing balance for each day out to 90 days, and the first day that balance dips below your floor. That tells you whether the repair clears the account before the paycheck.
Open the future-most month tonight. If the only month holding money is next month, keep that buffer. The next dollar you can spare goes one month past it.
Your plan, a month ahead.
