Your Holiday Money Lives in Four Categories. Your Deadline Lives in One.
Last year, the National Retail Federation's holiday survey put planned spending at $890 per person on gifts, food, decorations and other seasonal items. Almost none of that is one purchase. It is a stack of smaller ones, and in a careful plan it lives in several categories at once.
Each of those categories can look fine on its own. The question you actually care about in mid-October is different: will the whole season be paid for by the time it arrives?
One goal, four homes
Say your plan has these holiday categories, with what you have set aside so far:
- Gifts: $310 of $600
- Holiday travel: $150 of $400
- Holiday food: $40 of $180
- Decorations and cards: $80 of $80
Three are partly funded and one is done. Read one at a time, nothing looks alarming. Add them up and you have $580 of $1,260, with $680 still to go and roughly two months before the money starts leaving.
That total is the number that decides whether December goes on a credit card. It is also the number most plans never show in one place.
Why the total stays hidden
YNAB's targets work per category, and that is the right place for them. A gift target should track gifts. The trouble is that real goals rarely respect category lines. The holiday season is part gifts, part travel, part food. A new roof is part emergency fund, part home repairs, part what you set aside last spring.
So the season-sized question gets answered on a scrap of paper, or not at all. You fund what is due this month, assume the rest will catch up, and find out in December whether it did.
The math to check it is not hard. It just has to be redone every time you assign money:
- Still to go: $1,260 − $580 = $680
- Months left: about 2
- Pace you need: $680 ÷ 2 = $340 a month across all four categories
If you have been putting in around $250 a month, you land about $180 short. That is the gap worth knowing about now, not on December 20.
How DollarAMP handles it
DollarAMP reads the plan you already keep in YNAB. A savings goal in DollarAMP can draw on several categories at once, so Gifts, Holiday travel, Holiday food and Decorations count toward a single holiday goal. Progress from all of them adds up to one number, measured against the total the season needs.
It also shows a pace and a projected date based on what you actually fund. If your real assignments put the goal on track for mid-January, that is what you see, while there is still time to change it.
DollarAMP requires an active YNAB account, which is sold separately by YNAB. Your categories, and every dollar you assign to them, stay in YNAB. DollarAMP adds up the categories and shows where the goal is heading.
What changes for you
Before: four categories that each look reasonable, and a season that quietly runs $180 over. After: one goal at 46% funded, a pace of $250 against the $340 you need, and a projected date that tells you plainly whether you make it.
The fix is usually small once you can see it. Move $90 a month in from a category with slack, trim the gift list by one person, or decide early that travel gets a smaller share this year. Each is a choice you make in October instead of a balance you carry in January.
Do this today, with or without the app
Write down every category that will pay for the holidays, including the ones you would not call holiday categories, such as the grocery overflow or the gas for the drive. Add up the targets, subtract what is already assigned, and divide by the months left.
If that number is higher than what you have been assigning, you just found the gap. Close it this month, while the deadline is still two months away.
Your plan, a month ahead.
